Printed circuit boards are an essential part of almost all electronic gadgets that you can find in the market today. These boards help in connecting various parts of the devices and also in providing power to those components. However, once the product has completed its life cycle it is discarded as electronic waste or e-waste. This e-waste can either be sent to landfills where it will cause environmental pollution or to recycling centers where the metals and other non-metallic parts can be recovered. A final method is to use a vacuum metallurgical technique to separate the copper from other metals in a waste PCB. This is the most expensive method but it is also the most environmentally-friendly. It can also yield the highest quality of recycled copper in comparison to other methods.

It is possible to recycle a populated PCB into a new functional product such as a beer mat or picture frame but this is only on a very small scale. The production of a populated PCB is extremely labour-intensive and there are very few companies that offer this service. This is because removing individual components can be difficult to do without damaging the circuit board and testing it for functionality afterward.

It is also expensive because a lot of the components that are removed would have been purchased from manufacturers who have their own recycling systems in place. Therefore, it is more efficient to recycle the raw copper material from a waste bare PCB than it is to try and salvage individual components. This will also reduce the amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills or recycling centers. This can be a significant problem because these facilities often contain toxic solvents and other chemicals that can contaminate the surrounding environment.
