About the Conference

In light of the critical role that international law plays in shaping the interactions between nations and addressing global challenges, this symposium aims to provide a platform for scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to engage in thoughtful discussions regarding the legal dimensions of the Nations’ engagement with international law.

The Symposium will delve into the multifaceted intersections of the Maldives’ legal landscape and international law. The Maldives, known for its unique geographical and cultural characteristics, holds a significant place in the international arena yet remains an unexplored territory in the Asian literature on international law.

Themes

The symposium will cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to and with a liberty to the Indian authors to write with comparative / Indo-Maldivian perspective or purely International Perspective for:

  • Historical Perspective on Trade and Sovereignty: Colonialism, Semi-colonialism.
  • Role of Commodities (Cowrie, Coir, Fish etc.) and Capitalism in Shaping the Maldives’ State Practice and Engagement with International Law.
  • The Maldives’ Engagement with International Law since Independence.
  • The Maldives’ Practice of International Law Employing the Domestic Law-International Law Relationship.
  • The Maldivian Courts and International Law.
  • The Maldives’ State Practice on Sea Level Rise and Maritime Delimitation.
  • The Maldives’ Treaty Practice – Generally, and with Reference to Shariah Reservations.
  • The Maldives’ LDS Graduation and Challenges in WTO.
  • The Maldives’ Approach to International Investment Agreements.
  • Maldives’ Approach to Foreign Arbitral Awards.
  • Climate Change and the Maldives: Challenges and Legal Responses.
  • Maldives’ Perspective on Law of Sea and Maritime Delimitation
  • Protection of Rights of Migrant Workers in Maldives: National and International Perspective
  • The Maldives’ Engagement with International Human Rights Law.
  • International Organizations and the Maldives: Impact and Cooperation.
  • The Role of Non-State Actors in Shaping Maldives’ Legal Landscape.
  • Regional Perspectives on the Maldives and international law.
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Maldives: Progress and Challenges.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts – 250-300 words and include the paper’s title, author(s) name, designation, affiliation, contact information.
  • Full Paper – 4000 – 6000 words (including footnotes OSCOLA Citation), English Only
  • A single .doc / .docx (Word) file of Abstract & Full Paper along with Short Bio / CV of not more than 2 pages to be uploaded separately in .pdf format
  • Authorship may be extended maximum up to two authors
  • In accordance with the double-blind process of review, the name of the author/s and their institutional affiliation must not be mentioned or indicated anywhere in main body of the manuscript
  • There is NO registration fee for the participation in the symposium. However, participants will need to cover their own expenses for travel and accommodation.
  • Symposium is Offline, however only 5 papers will be presented through online mode.

Important dates

  • Last Date for Submission of Full Paper with an Abstract: 10th December 2023
  • Notification of Selection of Paper: 3 days after the submission of Paper
  • After presentation, one month will be given for revising the paper and then selected papers only will get published in an edited book.
