Duration of Internship
June 2025
How did you Apply?
I downloaded the documents for the internship from the CIC website, filled them in using MS Office, printed them out, and sent them to the CIC office in Delhi through speed post along with my CV.
First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression
One has to mandatorily report to the Deputy Registrar of the Information Commissioner under whom the internship has been assigned. I was then introduced to the officials of the Commission, and most importantly, to the Information Commissioner under whom I was assigned the internship.
The infrastructure is pretty decent and aesthetic, and is overall very comfortable. This was more or less expected from a government statutory organization.
Main Tasks
The primary task is to observe courtroom proceedings, which take place from around 10:30 or 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. I made notes of individual cases during the proceedings. Interns have access to the system which consists of details of individual cases involving the RTI Act, and may study and analyze them further.
Furthermore, interns are assigned a topic on which they have to prepare a research paper, which has to be submitted mandatorily before the end of the internship.
Good Things about the Internship
The domain of the Right to Information Act is somewhat uncommon among law students, yet could be very crucial if they want. An internship at the Central Information Commission allows them to closely observe it. Interns have access to the systems consisting of the files and can study them accordingly.
The information from RTI applications is often relevant to regular court cases. It also provides insights into potential career options at the Central Information Commission.
Bad Things about the Internship
CIC usually does not see a lot of interns; as a result, there is not a lot of work for interns. The intensity of the work also depends upon the Information Commissioner under whom the internship has been assigned.
Also, there is no specific designated place to sit for interns. The lack of a canteen in the office was also disappointing.
Monthly Stipend
No stipend was provided for the duration of the internship.
Details about the Accommodation, Commuting to the Office
“The office is in Munirka. However, the closest location to the office where one can get a PG is Ber Sarai. I rented a PG for a month in that location, and the office was within walking distance from the PG, thus easing things in case I got late for the office in the morning.
Anything else you want to share?
There was sufficient time for a break after the hearing to eat something or interact. The CIC internship allowed us to closely observe the domain of the RTI Act and understand its facets.
CIC, overall, should build an environment that allows interns to play a larger role and helps them gain knowledge and skills in a more effective manner.
