First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression
On the first day, we were asked to wait for a short while, after which our details were cross-verified by the staff. We were then taken individually to meet the Secretary ma’am, who wished us the very best for our internship journey. Following this, we met the Deputy Secretary ma’am, who gave us a brief yet insightful overview of legal services, highlighting both its strengths and challenges.
She encouraged us to approach the internship with genuine interest and dedication, rather than merely fulfilling it as a formal requirement or for the sake of certification. The overall infrastructure of the office is well-developed and fully functional.
Main Tasks
Throughout the internship, we were provided with a structured schedule that was consistently followed until the end of the program. During the morning sessions, we attended counselling or helpline duties, where we handled calls from the public and assisted in providing legal advice under the supervision of a designated advocate.
In the afternoon, we participated in mediation sessions involving various types of disputes, with a particular focus on family matters and pre-litigation mediation for commercial cases.
Additionally, as part of our field visits, we had the opportunity to visit several important commissions. A significant was our visit to the Puzhal Central Prison.
Work Environment
The overall work environment was positive, supportive, and conducive to learning. We had the opportunity to interact with senior advocates, who were approachable and generous with their knowledge. They guided us through the principles and practices of mediation.
The environment at the office was friendly and inclusive, allowing interns to ask questions freely and engage meaningfully with the tasks assigned. This made the internship not only informative but also enjoyable and enriching.
Good Things about the Internship
The authorities at the organization were extremely friendly and approachable, creating a comfortable atmosphere for interns to learn and engage. Throughout the internship, we were exposed to the practical realities of legal services.
Bad Things about the Internship
There were no significant challenges during the course of the internship. The overall experience was smooth, well-organized, and enriching. there were instances when we were unable to witness certain mediation sessions due to the absence of the parties and confidentiality concerns
Monthly Stipend
No stipend was provided for the duration of the internship. However, the experience offered valuable practical exposure and learning opportunities.
Details about the Accommodation, Commuting to the Office
The office is well-connected by public transport, making daily commuting convenient. It is within walking distance from both the metro station and the railway station. Also, the office is close to bus stop as well.
Anything else you want to share?
During the course of the internship, I had the opportunity to interact with various experts and observe a wide range of cases firsthand. Listening to the stories and legal struggles of different individuals.
One of the most impactful experiences was attending live mediation sessions, which provided a clear understanding of the mediator’s role in facilitating communication, resolving disputes, and promoting amicable settlements.
